Credit scores in Canada: ranges, bureaus and how to check yours free

Canada has two main credit bureaus, Equifax and TransUnion. Scores generally range from 300 to 900, and you can request your credit report from either bureau for free. Payment history and how much of your available credit you use matter most.

What affects your score

Each bureau and lender uses its own model, but the main factors are consistent.

Checking your report

Request your free report from Equifax and TransUnion and review both, because lenders may report to only one. Dispute errors directly with the bureau. Several banks and apps also show a free score; it may use a different model than your lender.

Building credit as a newcomer or student

A secured credit card, a small credit-builder product or a student card paid in full each month are common starting points. Keep utilization low and avoid applying for many products at once.

Frequently asked questions

Does checking my own score lower it?
No. Checking your own report or score is a soft inquiry and does not affect it.
