Banking, loans and insurance in British Columbia

British Columbia guarantees credit union deposits in full through the Credit Union Deposit Insurance Corporation of BC, and basic auto insurance comes only from the public insurer ICBC. Banks fall under CDIC.

Deposit protection

CUDIC guarantees all deposits and non-equity shares at BC credit unions without a limit. Bank deposits are covered by CDIC up to CAD 100,000 per eligible category.

Auto insurance

Basic Autoplan is mandatory and sold only by ICBC. Optional coverage can come from ICBC or private insurers.

Sales and property tax

BC charges 7% PST plus 5% GST. Home buyers pay a property transfer tax, with exemptions for some first-time buyers and newly built homes. The provincial speculation and vacancy tax applies in designated areas, and eligible owners can claim a home owner grant on their property tax.
