Banking, loans and insurance in Ontario

In Ontario, credit unions are regulated by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA), which also insures their eligible deposits. Car insurance is sold by private insurers under FSRA rules, so prices vary widely and shopping around matters.

Deposit protection

FSRA's deposit insurance covers eligible deposits at Ontario credit unions up to CAD 250,000, and eligible deposits in registered plans such as RRSPs and TFSAs without a limit. Banks are covered by CDIC instead.

Auto insurance

Auto insurance is mandatory and sold by private insurers. Rates are approved by FSRA but set by each insurer, so quotes for the same driver can differ a lot.

Sales and property tax

Ontario uses a 13% HST. The province charges a land transfer tax on home purchases, and Toronto adds its own municipal land transfer tax. First-time buyers may qualify for refunds on part of both. Property values are assessed province-wide by MPAC.
